Katie Burnett Maintains Lead at LPGA Qualifying Tournament
Symetra Tour professional Katie Burnett fired an impressive third-round 6-under par 66 to extend her lead at the LPGA Qualifying Tournament stage two.
The Brunswick, Ga. native carded four birdies and an eagle at the Plantation Golf and Country Club Panther Course and credited her solid play this week to time off where she worked countless hours on her putting.
“I’m really glad I had a week off last week because I told my coach that I felt like everything was mediocre and I needed a touch-up on some things,” said Burnett. “He really worked with me on my putting last week and I’ve been putting really well week.”
Burnett began the blistering round with a tap-in birdie on the par-4 eighth then recorded five consecutive pars until notching another birdie at the 360 yard par-4 14th.
The former University of South Carolina Gamecock recorded her second eagle of the tournament which came at the par-5 16th after her she hit her second shot to 12 feet then knocked in the putt for eagle. Burnett closed out the impressive round in style with a birdie at the 383 yard par-4 18th.
The 22-year-old played alongside amateurs Breanna Elliott and Marina Stuetz and according to Burnett, the trio managed to enjoy themselves in the midst of a pressure-packed week.
“I had a really good group,” said Burnett. “The girls were a lot of fun and Brianna was playing really good on the front so I was like oh gosh, I have to keep up. I just tried to come out and play my game and not worry about really what anyone else was doing.”
Despite Burnett’s newly acquired professional status, she already has a bit of experience under belt as a result of playing on the Symetra Tour immediately after graduating from the University of South Carolina in May.
During her short time on the Symetra Tour, Burnett played in six events and finished inside the top-20 three times.
Burnett heads into tomorrow’s final round with a six-shot over fellow Symetra Tour professional Kelly Jacques, Ladies European Tour (LET) standout Melissa Reid, and amateur Breanna Elliott.
The top 70 and ties on Friday will advance into the final Qualifying Tournament Stage III.
The final Stage III Q-school will be contested over 90 holes Nov. 28 through Dec. 2, on both the Champions and Legends courses at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla. Top finishers in the final stage will earn 2013 LPGA membership (total number of cards TBD) and all others who make the cut will receive Symetra Tour status.
