A Memorable Experience for Maui Junior Golf, LPGA and Amateurs
November 10, 2012 - Lahaina, Hawaii: Beyond the Rainbow Foundation, an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) located in Maui, completed the 7th Annual Aloha Team Classic Pro/Am last month and created a memorable experience for the LPGA players, Maui's junior golfers and amateur golfers from across the country alike. Over the seven years the event has raised almost $90,000 to help youth based agencies across the island of Maui.
This year's event drew over 40 participants taking in all or part of the four-day event. The festivities began with a sunset Welcome Reception held at Honu in Lahaina and continued throughout the week with players enjoying two rounds of golf at the famed Kapalua Resort's Plantation Course and the final round at the Ka'anapali Golf Courses' championship Royal Course (Pro/Am day). Each day of golf included lunch (Pineapple Grill, the Plantation House Restaurant and Roy's Ka'anapali) and the event concluded at the Awards Dinner held at the Ritz-Carlton Kapalua.
One of the highlights of the four-day event was the LPGA Clinic held on Wednesday afternoon, at the Ka'anapali Golf Courses, which was open to the public with free admission. With 100 people (kids and adults) in attendance, six LPGA Players shared with the audience experiences from their life on the LPGA tour as part of question and answer introduction. Touring Professionals included: Lisa Ferrero, Anna Grzebien, Allison Hana, Olivia Jordan-Higgins, Stephanie Kono (Oahu) and Laura Kueny.
The ladies provided golf tips and instruction to the audience as well as having the kids ask them questions about College-level golf, what it was like to be on tour and how they prepare themselves for a tournament.
After the clinic, it was time for Maui's keiki to put their new knowledge into action and take to the course. More than 30 of Maui's youth ages 6 to 18 joined the LPGA Players both on the course as well as at the range (for those few that are just starting to learn the game) to play three holes with their new mentors. It was an amazing opportunity for our kids to be able to share the experience of playing golf with these quality and competitive players.
One Maui junior golfer approached Stephanie Kono after the clinic to thank her for coming out and speaking to the group saying "I had sort of given up on junior golf and after hearing you speak about how you were able to go to college because of golf and the experiences you've had, I'm totally getting back into golf." It is moments like this that make these interactions priceless and just one of the reasons why Beyond the Rainbow Foundation organizes this annual event.
Debbi Katz, President of Beyond the Rainbow Foundation expressed appreciation of the Foundation to the supporters of the Aloha Team Classic Pro/Am, "Without their continued support, the Foundation would not be able to host this event, bringing visitors to the island each October to help raise money for Maui's youth." She continued, "In particular we would also like to extend an extra Mahalo to Ka'anapali Golf Courses for all of their help in making the Clinic possible, a big thank you to Maui Executive Transportation for providing the bus transportation during the clinic and with Maui Soda and Ice Works for providing the refreshments that everyone enjoyed."
The most impressive aspect of this entire event is the countless hours by volunteers to plan and promote the Aloha Team Classic Pro/Am throughout the year to bring visitors to Maui to participate. This is an amazing example of how individuals and businesses are working together to help Maui's youth. The Foundation would also like to extend a big thank you to the many volunteers of Lahaina Complex After School Tutor Project that helped during the week of the event handling the tasks for setup and registration.
Debbi summed it up best when she said, "This is truly a community wide effort to bring visitors to Maui for this event to raise funds for some of Maui's smaller non-profit agencies that are truly "Helping Maui's youth realize the promise of their future! Mahalo to all for a job well done."
