LPGA PLAYERS TAKING GAME TO NEW HEIGHTS
The RR Donnelley LPGA Founders Cup held its annual media day on Thursday, Feb. 7th , to kick off the countdown to the 2013 tournament, but this year’s event would be considered anything but your typical media day.
Amanda Blumenherst, Paige Mackenzie and Wendy Ward were on hand, but instead of sitting at a podium and answering questions, they flipped the script on the media and challenged them to a closest-to-the-pin contest – from the rooftop of the JW Marriott Desert Ridge Resort and Spa.
Following a quick introduction by Tournament Director Chris Garrett and RR Donnelley representative Director of Marketing Rick Ryan in the resort’s main lobby, Paige appeared and challenged all in attendance to a closest-to-the-pin contest from atop the 6th floor roof down to the 9th hole of the tournament course, which was 105 yards away, but played closer to 95.
“This is nothing within my imagination that I would see myself ever doing while playing golf,” Paige said. “But it was a lot of fun out here today and hopefully this will help create some buzz about the tournament.”
“I definitely have never hit a golf ball from a roof before, this is a first time experience for me and it’s been pretty amazing,” said Amanda.
A 12x12 platform was built with a hitting mat, and the media and sponsors in attendance all got two shots to see if they could best the LPGA professionals. As expected, there were some great shots and there were some not-so-great shots, but all in all, everyone had a great time, which was the overall goal for the day.
“We just wanted to do something fun and something a little different, and based by the reaction from everyone out here, I think we accomplished that,” Garrett said. “I can’t thank Amanda, Paige and Wendy enough for agreeing to do this, though I think in the end they enjoyed it as much as the rest of the group.”
Many in attendance commented on how much fun they had and how different it was, and a few even asked Garrett how he could top this next year.
“That’s a good question, but that’s something we’ll have to deal with next year,” he said with a smile after pausing to think for second.
But for now, the focus is on the 2013 RR Donnelley Founders Cup, which tees it up March 12-17 at Wildfire Golf Club.
