BOSTON, Jan. 16, 2014 – The Legends Tour, the official LPGA tour for professionals age 45 and over, will kick off its 14th season of competition in May, adding two new locations to the 2014 schedule.
“The Legends Tour has experienced phenomenal growth and an extraordinary level of recognition over the past 12 months,” said Legends Tour CEO Jane Blalock. “We hosted 11 tournaments in 2013 with a roster that includes eight Hall of Famers and veteran stars, such as Nancy Lopez, Laura Davies, Lorie Kane, Rosie Jones and Jan Stephenson. These players continue to attract fans as the Legends Tour expands throughout the United States.”
New stops on this year’s schedule will include Old Waverly Golf Club in West Point, Miss., host of the 1999 U.S. Women’s Open Championship won by Juli Inkster. The course will host the Legends and the ISPS Handa Cup on Sept. 25-28, an event that features competition between Team U.S.A. and the defending champion World Team. This year’s event will be the ninth team competition between the United States and players from the rest of the world.
The second new venue will be The Seagate Country Club at The Hamlet in Delray Beach, Fla. That course will host the Walgreens Charity Championship Nov. 6-9, and will showcase 40 LPGA Legends vying for a minimum $200,000 purse. The tournament will benefit the Dan Marino Foundation for Autism.
The Legends Tour kicks off the 2014 season this spring at the third annual Walgreens Charity Classic, set for May 1-4. New this year, the tournament’s pro-am will be played at the Wigwam Resort in Litchfield, Ariz., with the 36-hole tournament returning to Grandview Golf Course in Sun City West, Ariz.
The Judson Collegiate & Legends Tour Pro-Am will pair 60 college players with 30 LPGA Legends for the third year at the Country Club of Roswell (Ga.). Hosted by Atlanta resident and Legends Tour star Rosie Jones June 27-30, the event brings together amateurs and pros in two simultaneous events. The pros play an 18-hole tournament while the collegians compete against each other in a 54-hole event. The tournament benefits the Judson Foundation.
The Swing for the Cure tournament returns to the Greater Seattle area for the third year. Set for July 27-28, at Inglewood Golf Club in Kenmore, Wash. -- home of LPGA Hall of Famer JoAnne Carner -- the event features a pro-am and an 18-hole tournament. The tournament benefits Komen for the Cure Puget Sound.
The eighth annual Wendy’s Charity Challenge will be contested Aug. 10-11, at the Country Club of Jackson in Jackson, Mich. The 18-hole tournament and pro-am event has raised more than $2 million for Wendy’s Wonderful Kids and the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption. A field of 25 LPGA Legends will compete for a $110,000 purse.
The tour’s largest event with a purse of $500,000 and a field of 60 players, the Legends Championship will be staged for the second year at French Lick Resort in French Lick, Ind. Held in September last season, this year’s event will move to Aug. 13-17 on the schedule. It is the tour’s only 54-hole tournament. The event will benefit Riley Hospital for Children, a division of Indiana University Health.
The BJ's Charity Pro-Am will return to Massachusetts for the fifth year. Set for Sept. 17, at Pinehills Golf Course in Plymouth, Mass., more than 70 LPGA Legends will team up with BJ's Wholesale Club vendor partners to play 18 holes and raise money for the BJ's Charitable Foundation. The event raises an average of $1.6 million each year.
More details about these and other events will be announced throughout the year. For ticket or tournament information, visit www.thelegendstour.com.
