Shot of the Year Earns Mo Martin Her First Major Championship & the Kia Most Compelling Performance for July

DAYTONA BEACH, FLORIDA, August 6, 2014 – Mo Martin was a shot behind the lead with a 240-yard second shot into the 18th – a par 5 – at Royal Birkdale Golf Club. Her response? The shot of her life, maybe even the shot of the year – a 3-wood that thwacked off the pin that ended up five feet away from the hole. One short stroke later ended in the back of the hole for her first eagle of the year. That eagle earned Martin a one-shot victory at the RICOH Women’s British Open and the honor of the Kia Most Compelling Performance for July.

In blustery, brutal final-round conditions, Martin’s even-par 72 tied the low round of the day and helped her hold off Suzann Pettersen and Shanshan Feng by one shot. Winless in 63 previous starts on the LPGA Tour, Martin hadn’t been closer than two shots of the lead all day until she pulled off the shot that will live in Women’s British Open folklore forever. Afterwards, she was forced to wait an hour as the leaders came in to see if her one-shot lead would hold.

The 2014 Kia Most Compelling Performance Award winner will be announced at the season-ending 2014 CME Group Tour Championship following an online fan vote (fan voting begins October 1, 2014). Performances may include a single tournament, multiple tournaments, single-round accomplishments or record-breaking performances. Winners of the 2014 Kia Performance Awards - listed below – will receive an all-new 2015 Kia K900, the brand’s first-ever luxury sedan, and the official vehicle of the LPGA. Michelle Wie earned the award for the month of June after clinching her first major victory at the U.S. Women’s Open with a clutch birdie on the par-3 17th to hold off Stacy Lewis. Lewis waited just off the green with a hug and fist pound for her friend after watching the 24-year-old Wie tame the famed Pinehurst No. 2 for her two-shot victory.
