LPGA Announces tournament in Malaysia with Sime Darby Leading multinational corporation will support LPGA's event in Malaysia
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., March 1, 2010 – Today the LPGA announced that the inaugural Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia will be played October 22-24, 2010 at the prestigious Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club (KLGCC). The announcement was made in Malaysia by Zayra Calderon, LPGA Executive Vice President, Tournament Development & Worldwide Sales, along with officials from Sime Darby Group and IMG, the tournament organizer.
The new LPGA tournament, to be held at least through 2012 per the three-year agreement, will feature the top 50 LPGA members from the Official Money List, along with 10 sponsor's exemptions. The 54-hole stroke play event with no cut will ensure that fans – many of whom will be viewing an LPGA event live for the first time – can catch all of their favorite stars in action throughout the weekend.
“Sime Darby is honored to be associated with this prestigious world-class sporting event which we will have the privilege of hosting at our very own Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club,” said Tun Musa Hitam, Chairman of the Sime Darby Group, Malaysia's leading multinational corporation.
“We are looking forward to working with our new partner Sime Darby,” said Calderon. “Their reach currently extends into 20 countries across the globe, and they impact a wide array of industries. We plan to do everything that we can as an association to help them achieve their goals through this partnership.”
Together with partners like IMG, the LPGA continues to expand its global impact, providing more playing opportunities for members and more global touch-points for its growing fan base.
“IMG prides itself in playing an integral role in developing the sport globally, and our footprint in Asia has been growing,” said Robbie Henchman, Senior Vice President of IMG. “With the support of Sime Darby and the LPGA, we can be assured that this inaugural event will deliver high quality in terms of international and local players as well as through the fabulous host venue.”
The announcement of another new LPGA tournament for 2010 continues the momentum for the association. The Honda PTT LPGA Thailand and HSBC Women's Champions in Singapore just concluded a successful two-week opening-season swing in Asia. Earlier this year, the LPGA added another new tournament to its 2010 schedule, the Sybase Match Play Championship to be held in May in New Jersey, and last month the LPGA and IMG secured Hana Bank Financial as title sponsor of an LPGA tournament for the next three years in Korea. Additionally, Kia Motors America chose in February to serve as title sponsor of the LPGA's new event in southern California, now known as the Kia Classic Presented by J Golf, to be held March 25-28.
The Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia will be shown on Golf Channel in the U.S. from 12 noon-2 p.m. EST during all three days of the tournament (October 22-24).
