Career
Trivia questions: Who is the only left-handed golfer to win an LPGA event? Which LPGA pro played five years of AAA-fast pitch softball before turning to golf? The answer to both questions is Bonnie Bryant. Although she did not leave the diamond for the links until age 20, Bryant was an LPGA winner by age 29-her fourth season. A two-shot loss to Kathy Cornelius at the 1973 Sealy- Faberge (Bryant finished a solo fifth) previewed her 1974 triumph. Mired in a five-way logjam two shots behind Sandra Spuzich entering final round action, Bryant broke from the pack with a career low 67 to claim a two-shot victory. The $5,700 first prize contributed to the finest season of her career. Although she struggled for several years thereafter, Bryant almost entered the victory circle again in 1979. Utilizing a final round charge once more, Bryant fired a 68 to join a playoff, which included Nancy Lopez, Mickey Wright, Hollis Stacy and Jo Ann Washam. Lopez won on the second playoff hole but Bryant's $6.675 paycheck was the largest of her career. A recurring knee ailment limited Bryant to nine 1983 appearances (best finish: T25, S&H Golf Classic).
