In 1983, she was a quarterfinalist at the U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship and the low amateur at the Florida Women’s Open. As a member of the University of Miami women’s golf team, Hammel won the 1983 NCAA individual championship, and her team won the title in 1984. Hammel was a 1983-84 All-American and a member of the 1984 U.S. Curtis Cup Team.
