After a three week break, the LPGA returns to action and so does the LPGA Fantasy Series! There are quite a few players that play well each time they tee it up in Malaysia, so with that said, here are my picks for this week's Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia.
Lydia Ko
Given what I outlined in my story last week about Lydia Ko’s winning record after taking some time off, the World No.2 is definitely my pick to win this week at Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia. This week marks the first start for Ko after three weeks off and her first event since her wins in back-to-back starts at the Canadian Pacific Women’s Open and Evian Championship. Ko played in Malaysia just once before, finishing T-8 in this event last year.
Shanshan Feng
Defending Champion Shanshan Feng returns to Malaysia where she has consistently played well and wins in back-to-back years wouldn’t come as a surprise. Feng finished runner-up at this event in 2013 before getting it done last year with a final round 63. Feng has yet to breakthrough for a win this season, despite notching 10 top-10 finishes, including a third place finish in her last start at the Evian Championship.
Gerina Piller
We are going to see a new Gerina Piller from now on. Coming off her clutch putt at the Solheim Cup that contributed to Team U.S.A.’s historic comeback, Piller will play with a new sense of confidence having played so well on the big stage that is the Solheim Cup. Still in search of her first victory on Tour, Piller has four top-10 finishes in 2015, including a T-2 at the Meijer LPGA Classic. She finished T-16 in Malaysia last season.
So Yeon Ryu
With seven top-5 finishes in 2015, So Yeon Ryu is due for a win. She came close here in the past, finishing T-3 in 2014, T-15 in 2013 and fifth in 2012.
Pornanong Phatlum
A runner-up in 2014, Pornanong Phatlum will be one to watch again this week. Despite struggling of late, missing six of her last eight cuts, she is trending upward with a T-2 finish at the Cambia Portland Classic and T-20 at the Evian Championship.
Chella Choi
A first time winner earlier this season, Chella Choi has consistently played well in Malaysia, including finishing in a tie for third last season and T-6 in 2013.
Kelly Tan
The highest ranked player from Malaysia, Kelly Tan plays in front of a hometown crowd this week in hopes of posting her best finish of the season. Her best finish this year was in a tie for 25th at the Kingsmill Championship.
Cheyenne Woods
Thanks to a sponsor’s invite, rookie Cheyenne Woods makes her debut in Malaysia this week. In her last three starts, Woods posted a T-65 at the Cambia Portland Classic and missed the cut in her last two events. Woods has played well after some time off and will look to make the most of her invite this week.
