Michelle Wie has withdrawn from the Marathon Classic presented by Owens Corning & O-I due to lingering bursitis in her left hip. Wie issued the following statement on Tuesday afternoon:
“After consulting with Dr. Thomas Graham, Dr. James Rosneck (hip specialist) and Dr. Alan Davis (foot specialist) at the Cleveland Clinic, I have decided to withdraw from the Marathon Classic this week due to lingering bursitis in my left hip and a bone spur in my left foot. I’m disappointed to miss one of the LPGA’s best tournaments, but I remain determined to get healthy as I know my best golf is still to come. I expect to return to competition at the RICOH Women’s British Open.”
Wie finished 11th at last week’s U.S. Women’s Open where she was seen limping and in visible pain throughout the week trying to defend her title at Lancaster Country Club. She withdrew from the Kingsmill Championship in May following an opening round 78 and later posted on Twitter about the diagnosis of bursistis in her left hip.
The injury is the latest in a series of setbacks for Wie who has struggled since winning last year’s U.S. Women’s Open, sustaining an injury to her index finger at the end of the 2014 season and battling illness earlier in 2015.
