New Zealand native Lydia Ko needed four extra holes to defeat Mirim Lee and Ariya Jutanugarn to pick up her fourth win of the season at the 2016 Marathon Classic Presented by Owens Corning and O-I. World No. 1 Ko shot a final-round 2-under par 69 to pick up her 14 LPGA Tour victory.
The trio finished regulation tied at 14-under par for the week. The 2014 champion Ko got to 14-under and into a three-way playoff by bogeying the par 4, 16th hole and finishing regulation with two pars.
It took playoff holes, which is the longest playoff in the history of this tournament, but Ko stepped into the winner’s circle for the second time in three years.
“Yeah, you know, first of all, it's always good to come back to a place where you've well played,” said Ko. “The fans have been super supportive every year I come here, and Judd and the sponsors were nice enough to give me a sponsor's invite when I was an amateur. Just a lot of great memories here. To be able to win this tournament again in two years is I think going to make it a little bit more special.”
“It's been a fun week. I guess we had to play four extra holes for somebody to be holding the trophy, but Mirim and Ariya all had a great week, so it was hard to say someone deserved the trophy more than the others.”
