For the second consecutive week on Tour, there is a Jutanugarn atop the leaderboard.
New world No. 1 Ariya Jutanugarn won last week’s Manulife LPGA Classic, but this week its sister, Moriya, who leads the way on day two of the Meijer LPGA Classic for Simply Give. Jutanugarn posted a 5-under par, 66 to jump out to the early lead as the day one leaders begin their second round. Despite one bogey and a double, Jutanugarn made it around in 26 putts.
“It was great. I've been playing solid,” Jutanugarn said after her round. “I rolled the ball good on the green, which is, you know, everything seems to be good.”
Moriya, like her sister, has elevated her game to a new level over the last year. The pair both work with Gary Gilchrist as well as Vision 54’s Pia Nilsson And Lynn Marriott. Moriya started the season ranked 85th in the Rolex Rankings and currently sits at No. 46. Friday, getting the ball rolling well and good feelings about Blythefield Country Club, put Moriya in contention for her first win on Tour.
“It's a big goal for me, like I've been setting a goal as I want to win my first event,” Jutanugarn told the media. “But I just want to be myself on the golf course, have fun and I'm pretty sure good things will happen.”
When asked what her game plan will be the remainder of the week, Moriya’s response could have just as easily come from her sister, with both employing the positive teachings of Vision 54.
“I just want to play my own game, just go out and have fun out there on the golf course.”
Jutanugarn currently sits in a share of the lead at nine-under par with Holly Clyburn who teed off in the afternoon wave and is currently 2-under through five holes. Rookie Sung Hyun Park followed her opening round 67 with a 68 on Friday to climb to 7-under par along with Stacy Lewis.
