Georgia Hall always hoped she would meet a member of the British royal family. Growing up a three-hour drive south of Buckingham Palace in Bournemouth, Hall often kept up with the latest happenings surrounding Queen Elizabeth II and her family. On Thursday, Hall got a chance to meet not the Queen but her son, Prince Charles, during a ceremony at Buckingham Palace where Hall was recognized with an MBE, or Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, in the Queen’s Birthday Honors.
“Prince Charles presented the honor to me and he asked me for golf lessons!” Hall told LPGA.com via email following the ceremony. “It’s hard not to follow what’s going on in the royal family. I was hoping it would be either Charles or Harry.”
In June, it was announced that Hall would be recognized with an MBE, the third highest ranking Order of the British Empire Award. In 2018, Hall became the first Englishwoman since 2004 to win the AIG Women’s British Open when she captured the major championship at Royal Lytham & St Annes.
“It’s amazing to have the MBE and to be recognized for my achievements, but for women’s golf I think it’s massive to be recognized in this way,” Hall said.
Hall’s mother, grandmother and her boyfriend and caddie, Harry Tyrrell, attended the ceremony at Buckingham Palace. The group enjoyed tea in London afterwards.
