INDIANAPOLIS, IN - Bronte Law began walking before her putt fell on the 15th. It was her seventh birdie of the day. Her fist pumped as the ball rolled through the heart of the cup.
“I think it’s kind of like my number one fan almost. It’s like someone who’s always supporting you, and rooting you on. If you can do that yourself, I think that’s half the battle really,” Law explained.
Being her own number-one fan has let her drop the law in multiple key moments this season. She carded a 65 on Sunday to get into a playoff at the MEDIHEAL Championship. She backed up the charge with a victory at the Pure Silk Championship, and was part of a historic Team Europe Solheim Cup win.
Reflecting on her time on the tour since her rookie season in 2017, she realized that on the LPGA, players have to go at least 10 under to win. Law started to believe she could put herself in those positions at the UL International Crown in South Korea last year, where she got her first taste of professional international match play. “I thought this is something I could do consistently. You have to be to be in contention, and obviously that’s something I’ve learned every week. You have to be going low shooting those low numbers. Otherwise you’ll just be making cuts or missing cuts.”
A big key to the Englishwoman’s success is finding consecutive birdies, which she did twice today. When Law is in the midst of a spurt of birdies, she views herself like a financer. “I almost use the analogy of banking the birdies away. They’re done now, it’s my job to go out there and make some more.”
That perspective led to Law achieving her goals for the season, making the Solheim Cup and winning a tournament. It is also helping Law towards her ultimate goal of winning a major.
Of her experiences this season, winning the Solheim Cup was the moment she’ll look to draw upon the most to hoist one of the five major trophies. “Just be able to play under that sort of pressure is way more than you would experience in a major.”
Handling herself confidently in Gleneagles hasn’t changed Law’s view of herself as a golfer, only reinforcing her strong self-belief. That conviction is giving Law more opportunities to enjoy herself, like she did on the 7th today.
“I enjoy that a lot. It’s why I play the game. When it’s going well, it’s a lot of fun.”
