Today’s first round of the Cambia Portland Classic marked Mo Martin’s first LPGA Tour event in nearly 15 months. After missing the cut at the 2019 Walmart NW Arkansas Championship, Martin was sidelined with a chronic back injury, spending the last months rehabbing and training to finally get back to the LPGA Tour.
“I was having some pretty bad spasms, and it's scary. Having a back injury is pretty debilitating,” said Martin. “I've got two really cute little kitties at home and I couldn't pick them up at one point, so that's just really sad, and then especially when your job demands your body along with your mind and your spirit.”
Today’s first round was a joyous one, as Martin shot a 4-under 68 and is tied for eighth. Ever the positive soul, Martin even found an upside to the rain that fell on Friday, bringing cooler temperatures and a respite from the heavy smoke that blanketed Portland for much of the last two weeks.
“I'm super grateful. It's been quite a strange week, but Cambia has been a champion and kept us safe,” said Martin. “Down to three days, and lucky to be playing. And the air is nice. It's back to beautiful Portland. The trees, you know, everything is getting a lot clearer, and I hope the rain helped the fires. That's an important thing, too.”
