BEDMINSTER – Friday at 6:45 a.m., 39 players returned to the Old Course at Trump National Bedminster to complete the opening round of the U.S. Women’s Open conducted by the USGA.
Shanshan Feng caught the better end of the draw on Thursday, posting a bogey-free, 66 for her low round in the U.S. Women’s Open. The round gave Feng the early lead on a hot and humid day, which gave way to storms and pouring rain in the afternoon and suspended play for two hours. The delay interrupted the low round of the afternoon owned by Gaby Lopez, who made four birdies in her first eight holes to jump to the top of the leaderboard. But Mother Nature killed Lopez’s momentum as she returned to the course with a bogey and double bogey to fall back to 2-under par and had to return to the course Friday morning to complete her round.
It was JLPGA’s Rumi Yoshiba, who owned the low round of the afternoon wave, and returned to the course Friday morning to finish out her four-under par, 68 to sit just two-back of Feng.
Carlota Ciganda, who got off to a bogey-free start with four birdies that put her within striking distance of the lead, also returned to the course Friday to complete the 18th hole where she made bogey to sit three-back of Feng.
Play was suspended for the day at 8:33 p.m. due to darkness. The second round began at 7:00 a.m. with all tee times delayed 15 minutes from their originally schedule time.
Michelle Wie, who had already began her second round Friday morning, withdrew from the U.S. Women’s Open at the 11th hole, her second hole of the day, due to injury. She was treated by staff on-site throughout her opening round to address an apparent right shoulder injury.
