Cheyenne Knight came into the week with a positive outlook. She admitted throughout the tournament that she had nothing to lose and everything to gain. She felt her golf was trending in the right direction and if she played well, she could improve her LPGA standing and quite possibly avoid a trip back to Q-Series.
The Texas native did just that - and much more - by claiming her first LPGA Tour title in front of family and friends at the 2019 Volunteers of America Classic.
"Going into the event fighting for my job, to come out a winner truly says a lot about my perseverance and grit. To shoot 33-33 on the front and back nine is a sign from Brandon," Knight told LPGA.com, referring to her brother, Brandon Burgett, who was killed in 2008 when the truck he was driving was hit by a drunk driver. "He is always with me, my constant guardian angel. God is good!"
Burgett's football number was 33, which Knight holds dear as her lucky number.
Knight posted a five-under-par 66 in the final round to finish at 18-under, two strokes in front of Brittany Altomare and Jaye Marie Green, to become the sixth Rolex First-Time winner of the season.
"To be an LPGA winner - it is something that will be with me forever. It’s a dream come true! I am so blessed and so grateful," said Knight. "To win in my home state, with all my family and friends, the event that I was most looking forward to, you can't write it any better."
